Google's AI Detector Finds Robots in Ordinary Photos of Politicians
Ourtake
The watermark was invisible to humans. The detector saw it anyway, and then the detector was asked to be less sure.
What happened
Google's SynthID Detector, launched publicly in October 2026, flagged five images posted by politicians as made or edited with Google AI, though the posters said no AI was used. After a Full Fact investigation, Google changed the public tool to return an 'Unsure' verdict for those images, but questions about other flagged images remain.
