ChatGPT invents a phone lookup service and sends users to a company that never offered one

Ourtake

Nobody asked a geocoding API to find phone numbers, but ChatGPT was happy to build the bridge anyway.

What happened

ChatGPT generated Python code for a 'reverse phone number lookup' that referenced OpenCage's servers, though OpenCage has never offered that service. Users who followed the answer signed up, tested the geocoding API briefly and left, and OpenCage reported daily support requests. OpenCage publicized the issue, and OpenAI may have already fixed it.
