Hospital worker feeds 3,182 patient records to an unapproved AI tool, and the patients get the letter

Ourtake

No Social Security numbers were included, which is a small mercy for the 3,182 people whose records went to an unvetted tool anyway.

What happened

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is notifying about 3,182 patients that their health information may have been exposed after a staff member uploaded a patient spreadsheet to an outside AI platform the hospital had not approved. The hospital says the worker deleted the prompt, thread and document, asked the tool's operator to delete the data, and began mailing letters on Oct. 22, 2026 offering free credit monitoring.
