Robot DJs Get Peer Pressured Into Playing the Same Song Forever

Ourtake

Researchers found that LLM crowds herd harder than humans and correct themselves less, which is a bad trait for a playlist and a worse one for anything with more at stake.

What happened

Researchers modeled the Music Lab experiment with large populations of LLM agents recommending unfamiliar songs. With exposure to cumulative counts, the agents produced runaway cascades of extreme recommendations that diverged from each song's intrinsic appeal. LLM populations herded more than humans and were less able to self-correct.
