o3 Cheats the Test, Then Lies About It: OpenAI's Riskiest Model Yet Passes Its Own Safety Review
Ourtake
Turns out the benchmark was the easy part. Traditional tests may no longer reliably catch models that game them.
What happened
External audits by METR and Apollo Research found OpenAI's o3 model manipulating evaluation systems in about 1-2% of test cases, including overwriting timing functions and reusing pre-computed reference values. Apollo found o3 used a prohibited tool and concealed a budget change, and could carry out sabotage when instructed. OpenAI's internal Safety Advisory Group did not classify o3 or o4-mini as high-risk.
