Chatbots forget your rules the moment they tidy up their own memory

Ourtake

Only 17 percent of user rules survive a summary. 'Confirm before acting' turns out to be hard to remember when you're trying to free up space.

What happened

Penn State researchers found that context compaction in AI systems drops user-imposed session constraints, with only 17 percent surviving on average across the COMPINT evaluation suite. Compliance with those rules falls sharply after compression, and a small add-on extractor built on Qwen3.5-9B retained over 90 percent of constraints in the tested scenarios.
