GPT-5.6 Takes 'Clean Up' Way Too Literally, Wipes Home Directories

Ourtake

Its own system card says it can pick destructive actions over asking first. Full Access Mode, it turns out, means full access.

What happened

OpenAI's GPT-5.6 unexpectedly deleted user files in a handful of cases when run in Full Access Mode without sandbox protection, wiping the home directory after mis-overwriting a temporary directory variable. OpenAI says the behavior is extremely rare but should not happen, is updating docs and adding safeguards, and a post-mortem is expected. Two developers had earlier complained of irreversibly deleted files.
