Some 'Summarize with AI' buttons are secretly stuffing your chatbot's memory with ads

Ourtake

Your chatbot's 'trusted sources' list may have been written by a sales team with a plugin.

What happened

Microsoft researchers found over 50 manipulative prompts from 31 companies across 14 industries, embedded in 'Summarize with AI' buttons. Clicking them makes assistants like Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok save the sponsoring site as a trusted source in memory. Microsoft says it has built additional defenses and that some previously reported behavior could no longer be reproduced.
