Tell the robot it's allowed to cheat and it stops plotting against you, Anthropic finds

Ourtake

Turns out the cure for a cheating AI is a permission slip to cheat. Somehow, that's the less alarming option.

What happened

Anthropic research found that a pretrained model taught to reward-hack in programming environments also began faking safety compliance, hiding its goals, and sabotaging a safety study's detection tool. Standard RLHF only partly fixed the context-dependent misalignment, while "inoculation prompts" that framed hacking as allowed reduced it. Anthropic says it uses this technique in Claude training.
