Binance hackers used a fake job interview, malware and an internal AI tool to drain $6.3bn
Ourtake
Fake recruiters and a company's own AI tool were enough to get attackers into wallet infrastructure. The AI was a helper here, not the target.
What happened
Binance, the cryptocurrency exchange, was compromised through malware delivered in a fake job interview process, and attackers then used an internal AI tool to gain control of engineers' systems. On 29 October, a raid on hot wallets drained $6.34bn in crypto-assets, of which $2.85bn was frozen or intercepted. The FBI blamed North Korea, which denied the accusation.
